I am reading Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" and it made me realise that weirdly I've never read any of his work before. Not even "Breakfast At Tiffany's". He's an incredibly compelling writer and I kinda want to squee a bit. Which is when I realised that I only know one person in my real life who even knows who Truman Capote is, let alone who would be surprised along with me that I've not read him before. And that's...depressing actually. It makes me glad that there's so many smart people online who post interesting stuff that I can read so that my brain doesn't completely atrophy. Thankyou internet people.

I just finished it last night and got to the author's note about him wanting to pioneer a new genre of nonfiction novel, and I thought that's exactly it - why it was so enjoyable - because it wasn't just good reporting, it was structured and paced like a really good novel.

Also, reading about murders long past doesn't usually bother me but he made it so visceral it was a bit uncomfortable to read some parts. Mmm, I love good writing, and funnily enough being in fandom has raised my standards to such a high level I can't read a lot of pro fic anymore.

Meanwhile, I notice you've been discovering Due South + DS fandom. It looks like you're having a lovely time. I watched it years ago, way before I was a slasher. I recently rewatched the RayV eps (a year or so ago) but couldn't get my hands on the RayK ones which is a pity.

Truman Capote, along with George Plimpton and Tom Wolfe, pretty much single handedly invented New Journalism. Which has not turned out to be a very good idea, unfortunately, because not everyone can do what they did.

But his great ambitions for what he wanted In Cold Blood to do were realized!
